Cole Porter was one of AmericaΓÇÖs greatest songwriters, famous for such elegant and timeless classics as I Get a Kick Out of You, Begin the Beguine and countless more. But his creativity derived from a complex and hedonistic character with, shall we say, strong appetites. Unlike the Cary Grant version of the Cole Porter story, 1946ΓÇÖs Night and Day, De-Lovely director Irwin Winkler doesnΓÇÖt shy away from the composerΓÇÖs homosexuality, as the film focuses on his complicated marriage with his muse and wife, Linda Lee Thomas (Ashley Judd). An elderly Porter (Kevin Kline) sits in a theatre and watches what is supposedly a preview of a musical based on his story, and the narrative unfolds as the characters from his past come to life on stage. Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette, among others, provide the cover versions, while Robbie Williams sings De-Lovely. Fans of Porter and musicals will be in heaven.
